ANNOUNCING THE NACHA MENDEZ MUSIC
SCHOLARSHIP FOR NEW MEXICAN GIRLS OF
COLOR
Established in 2021, The Nacha Mendez Music Scholarship
awards Scholarships for Economically Disadvantaged New
Mexican Girls—Second round of Scholarships To Be Awarded in
May 2023. Applications are now available online
www.nachamendezscholarship.com.
Application deadline Jan. 25 - March13, 2023.
Santa Fe, New Mexico—New Mexican artist Margarita Cordero (b.
Chicago, raised in La Union, NM), who performs as “Nacha Mendez,”
started a music scholarship for New Mexican girls of color. Fundraising
took place in 2021 and 2022. In 2022 seven scholarships were
awarded. Awards will be given to girls ages 8-15. The scholarships will
be unrestricted so that funds can be applied where the need is greatest
—music lessons, instrument purchase, travel expenses, or any cost
that is essential to supporting access to learning.
Nominated girls will submit applications for review by the Scholarship
Panel. In addition to the financial scholarship, awardees will receive
mentorship and support from the Scholarship Committee to provide
the most opportunity and guidance for the girls.
The scope of the awards will expand this year. The Scholarship
Committee will (1) expand eligibility to girls from throughout New
Mexico, (2) increase the number of scholarships given, and (3) increase
the financial award amount. Fundraising strategy is aimed to establish
funds for the scholarships and an operational budget to continue and
expand the scholarship program into the future.
Margarita Cordero has assembled a panel of musicians and music
industry experts to become part of the selection committee.
The Nacha Mendez Music Scholarship Fund is a 501c3 nonprofit
organization in accordance with the standards and regulations of the
IRS. As such, donations to the Nacha Mendez Scholarship Fund are
tax deductible.
